IGNORANCE AS STATE POLICY
Tuesday, July 28th, 2009The news this week supports my contention that ignorance collects in large groups in Oklahoma. Early in the week , public schools in Tulsa and Oklahoma City (our two largest cities) were placed on probation. Today we learned that Oklahoma spends less than the national average on each student; more than $2,200 less. We spend less than any of the surrounding states; even poor Arkansas spends more on their students. Hell, we are even behind Mississippi. Maybe our children would do better if they were exposed to a bit more education and a bit less religion and football.
Don’t blame it on the teachers – we have some damned good teachers. Some of our best are working for better salaries in Texas, Arkansas, Missouri or Kansas. Our poiticians are obviously products of our flawed eduational system. English only laws, marble monuments to the Ten Commandments, campaigns against gays and lesbians, expanding toll roads, etc.; stop pandering for votes and start thinking about those who will someday be called upon to rescue us from disaster.
